Folk Art Silhouettes

This pair of vintage full-length silhouettes of Charlotte Von Stein and Dr Johann Goethe who had intimate friendship of twelve years. This pair of portraits show typical 18thC attire and have their name and title at the base. Hollow-cut silhouettes were very popular from in the early 18 and 19thC before cameras replaced this kind of portraiture/art. These folk art portraits in charcoal or black paint on brown paper have a mysterious appeal in their raw originality.
