French 19thC Cloche

The French developed the glass cloche, or bell jar, formed from a solid piece of dome-shaped glass. The purpose was to protect an early garden plant from bleak cold and frost.  This particular one has had a hole drilled in the top so could be hung or fitted with lighting....either way it is a beautiful and decorative antique element.
