Early Irish Settle

sku: IRE03

A rare and beautiful highback Irish Settle with diagonal panelling to the back - originally from an Inn in County Cork, this piece would have been on the ground floor near an open fire place. Traditionally called a 'settle bed' - they were used as a settle during the day and a bed at night,  the seat lifts up and opens to the floor so that it could be filled with straw and used as a place to sleep when the rooms where full.

This settle is a very good example of classic Irish furniture and it would be rare to find a piece with such well preserved paintwork and originality - we have hinged the lid so it is easy to use for storage. C1820's

Size: 2000mm Long x 540mm D x 1540mm High
