This stunning Double Ikat textile originates from Tenganan, a small village in southeast Bali. These wall pieces are called Geringsing, meaning 'without sickness' and are considered the most magical and powerful textiles of Bali.
The muted colours in this weaving are created from the natural dyes of indigo (blues) and morinda, a member of the coffee tree (reds) – the combination creates the reddish-brown colour. Shell beadwork in the form of geometric figures and turtles adds another layer of complexity. NB. The last 3 images are the reverse side of the wall-hanging.
