Rethinking Design: The Beauty of Salvage and Sustainable Building
In a world that’s becoming more conscious of sustainability, using second-hand materials when building or renovating isn’t just a responsible choice—it’s a creative one. Whether you're on a Greek island or in the Byron hinterland, old buildings tell a story with their weathered textures, antique doors and charming windows.
When building or renovating, it's easy to become distracted and obsessed with aesthetics and overlook the waste and environmental impact that is synonymous with the building industry. Every year, usable and often good-quality materials unfortunately end up in landfills. Using reclaimed materials means reducing demand for new production, which lowers carbon footprints and saves energy. Choosing second-hand elements and salvaged doors or windows reduces waste, adds authentic character, and brings craftsmanship to a home that mass-produced elements often lack.
A trip to France in the late 80s cemented our love of old doors (& buildings) and set us on a path of no return. From France to Argentina, Belgium, and India, our passion for architectural elements began and will probably end here!
